Face Fit Testing Services

Do I need to Face Fit Test my staff?

Face fit testing is a legal requirement for all members of staff using / being provided with respirators for their work. Tight-fitting respirators (such as disposable FFP2/3 masks, reusable half masks and full-face masks) rely on having a good seal with the wearer’s face. A face fit test must be carried out to ensure the respiratory protective equipment (RPE) can protect the wearer. By subjecting each wearer to a face fit test, you can be sure that your organisation is meeting and fulfilling the legal requirements laid out in the Health & Safety Executives (HSE) document INDG 479. In line with medical guidelines, medical staff conducting Aerosol Generating Procedures (AGP) and resuscitation should have access to FFP3 masks which they have been tested with.

What Masks need to be fit tested?

Face Coverings & Surgical face masks do not need fit testing. The below types of masks must be fit tested by a competent & qualified person. Disposable and Half Masks can be fitted with Qualitative or Quantitative methods. Full face masks can only be tested via the Quantitative method.

What Masks need to be fit tested?

Face Fit Testing is a series of tests and exercises simulating a full range of facial movements to ensure an adequate seal is maintained. The test is laid out as such:

Normal breathing
Deep breathing
Head side to side
Head up and down
Bending over
Talk out loud (reading a passage of text)
Normal breathing

 Candidates must be clean shaved to ensure that an adequate fit can be made and to have not consumed food, smoked, chewed gum or had any drinks 1 hour prior to the Fit Test.

What Masks need to be fit tested?

One of our qualified fit testers will attend your office / Ambulance station etc and conduct testing on your staff. Each member of staff will receive a certificate of testing valid for up to 3 years (subject to consultation with you and your requirements). Each test lasts around 20-30 minutes each.

We can also offer advice on suitable RPE for COVID-19 protection for Medical Staff, Companies and NHS / Private Trusts.
