Why Face Fit Testing Matters

A Face Fit Test verifies that a respirator creates an effective seal against the wearer’s face. Without this seal, hazardous substances – including dust, chemicals, or infectious aerosols – may bypass the mask entirely. This is particularly critical for roles involving Aerosol Generating Procedures (AGPs), such as those in clinical and emergency care settings.

Testing is legally required under the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) INDG 479 guidance for all staff who wear tight-fitting respirators, including:

• Disposable FFP2/FFP3 masks
• Reusable half-face masks
• Full-face respirators

Our On-Site Face Fit Testing Process

We make compliance convenient by coming directly to your workplace – whether it’s an office, ambulance station, factory, or medical site. Our qualified fit testers use Qualitative or Quantitative methods based on the type of mask and your organisational needs.

Each test includes a series of physical exercises to simulate real-world movement and ensure the mask’s seal remains secure. These include:

• Normal and deep breathing
• Moving the head side to side and up and down
• Speaking aloud
• Bending over
• Repeating normal breathing

For the test to be valid, candidates must be:

• Clean-shaven in areas where the mask seals
• Free from food, drink, gum, or smoking for at least 1 hour prior
